The Pearson Building and the Slade School of Fine Art form two sides of the Grade 1 Listed quadrangle at the heart of the UCL Campus in central London.
Gaunt Francis won an OJEC bid to rationalise the buildings in the light of the University’s changing needs. Through careful co-ordination with English Heritage and the Camden Planning Department, the interior of the Pearson Building has been reconfigured to create a series of new research offices and student spaces. A series of contemporary mezzanine floors, new entrances and internal glazed screens forming internal walls provide, within the strong historical context, a new home for the Geography Department.
The series of mezzanines has also been inserted into the Slade, whilst the workshops and studios are reconfigured to suit the changing requirements of the School of Art. In conjunction with the works within the building, a dramatic new sculpture studio is formed under the listed quadrangle itself and naturally lit via large glass panels set into the lawn.
