The British Council is the cultural and educational arm of the British Embassy, and Cairo is its largest centre in the Middle East. The building has grown steadily since its acquisition in 1972 but in a haphazard and piecemeal form. It needed greater presence and better rationalisation to maintain its status.
Gaunt Francis carefully analysed the client’s requirements to improve the circulation, security and efficiency of the complex combined with the compete overhaul of its services. A modern, new build entrance hall has been sensitively incorporated to highlight the building entrance and unify the complex.
Successful co-ordination with local architects has ensured that the on-site works progressed in accordance with the requirements, and the completed development was reopened by Tessa Jowell, the Minster for Education, in October 2003.
